Getting a garden in stewed and mulled at my mind all of the months of April and May. April I planned and plotted (in my brain), and did get lots of yard work done but I didn’t get to our raised bed gardens.
My mind was consumed in the month of May by our rental home, so the garden continued to be pushed aside.
Although I didn’t get our formal garden space planted until today, I did manage to get some other things planted over the past two months:
-14 strawberry plants (of which ½ don’t seem to be taking off like I had hoped)
-2 blueberry bushes
-1 blackberry bush
-2 peach trees
- a few more herbs planted in my front flowerbeds as well as some flowers
I also took out three rose bushes, two evergreen bushes and one Oregon grape bush.
I almost forgot…. I planted 2 tomato plants, and experimented with planting some veggies in containers: Sunflowers, cauliflower, cucumber and lettuce. I may transplant these starts in the ground. Lil’Miss loves to dig in the containers and my little sprouts are just barely hanging in there.
Last night was a nice evening so all of us made it out back after our barbeque hamburger dinner to work on weeding the raised bed gardens. After pulling all the clover and other weeds, the soil looked wonderful and rich. I turned it over with a shovel and raked it smooth and the happiness set in. The garden space is finally ready!!
So this afternoon I got the following planted: cherry tomatoes, snap peas, rainbow carrots, regular carrots, Walla Walla sweet onions, cucumbers, zuchinni, cilantro, iceburg lettuce, Romaine lettuce, watermelon and cauliflower.
[Side Note: I only planted one watermelon seed. Lil'Miss got into the seeds and ate or lost all but one of the watermelon seeds]If everything works out and grows as hoped. We will have a fruitful harvest. So far my two apple trees look like they are going to have a good year if I can keep the bugs at bay! I love yummy homegrown apples!
I am experimenting with different trellis ideas. My goal is to have my cucumbers, zucchini and yet to be planted cantaloupe and yellow squash growing up trellis’s rather than taking up precious garden space. I have a few trellis’s already set up, and another one in the process of creating from a thrift store find. I will post once I get them all put together.
Well that is today’s garden update. I will have more to share soon I am sure!!
Happy Gardening.
