The Not So Fruitful Garden

I planted a garden twice this year. Round one with seeds was a complete fail. I had some peas sprout, but they were quickly eaten away by bugs. I am guessing the culprit was earwigs, those nasty bugs are such a pest. It actually could have been ants or pill bugs too, they have given me garden problems in the past.



I had some other plants sprout: lettuce, carrots and broccoli but no more than a few inches with no fruit. Quite sad and disappointing.


A friend from church scored hundreds of plant starts from a local nursery that was closing out their garden plants. She shared with me several pepper and tomato plants. I was excited to give the garden another chance this season. Some of the plants took root and began growing, but again, no fruit. This may have been my fault, the week the hubster was in the hospital I didn’t get anything water and I think the garden suffered the most. The plants are still there, but they are small and didn’t take off like I had hoped.


I think I may have a soil issue. I am going to work on getting it worked over between now and next spring. I am not used to having so many plants fail me. The tomatoes I did have that survived, had a fungus. There are other neighbor’s gardens that didn’t do well this year as well, so I am not alone. It is a bummer when you have grand plans of learning how to can new things.


That didn’t stop me. Stay tuned and I will share what I have been able to preserve this year.


Hopefully I will have better luck next year. I don’t get out in the back yard as much as I would like between the heat, an army crawler that attempts to eat rocks, and a toddler that likes to eat everything else in site, including unripe apples and grapes which doesn’t look so good on its way out.

That is the good that took place in our garden. The apple trees produced, yet buggy I have still been able to make a few batches of apple sauce. The grape vines are growing like crazy and we will be able to pick tons of grapes soon.
